HENRY GUSTAVUS HODGE JR. ESQ.

(1781-1857)

Henry Hodge Jr. was born circa 1781 in the Scotland Neck/Kehukey Creek Community of Halifax County, North Carolina. He was the fourth son of Henry Hodge and Catherine Bryant. Henry Jr. was first enumerated in the 1810 census in Livingston County, Kentucky. Listed in the household were one son and two daughters, all under the age of ten. Livingston County Tax records show him as a county resident from at least 1807 to 1820. He was last enumerated in Livingston County in the 1820 census. There is no record of his first marriage in Kentucky, so it is believed that his marriage to Mary took place in North Carolina between 1800 and 1810. In 1807 Henry Jr. was given power of attorney from his father to transact business in North Carolina  [Livingston Co., Ky. Deed Bk. A, pg. 280]. On Feb. 25, 1815, Henry and wife Mary sold 148 acres land along Claylick Creek to David Wood [Livingston Co., Ky. Deed Bk. C, pg.99]. On Sept. 2, 1816, Christopher Haynes sold 170 acres to Henry Hodge Jr., witnessed by Thomas Barnes. Deed recorded Sept. 9, 1816. [Livingston Co., Ky. Deed Bk. C, pg. 114].

Henry Jr. moved to Henry County, Tennessee prior to the 1830 census. He was listed on the voter’s list in Henry County in 1833, but by 1837 he was a resident of Hardeman County. A letter written on May 27, 1837 from William Travis of Henry County to Henry Hodge of Hardeman County spoke of Mr. Travis’ treatment of a sick mulatto woman that was the property of Mr. French. This mulatto woman was later sold to Henry and was the Jane listed in his will of 1857. She was listed as the yellow woman in Henry’s will and the mother of the yellow boy named Tody. It appears that he was possibly the illegimate son of Henry [William Travis Letter – courtesy of Elizabeth Dunham, Special Collections Assistant at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville - Special Collections Library]. On December 17 1844 his wife Mary died of an unknown cause in Hardeman County and on June 23, 1845 in Henry County, he married Susan Carter. Susan was the widow of James Carter. In 1857 Henry and wife Susan were still living in Henry County, Tennessee. As evident by his Will [dated January 12, 1857, Calloway Co., Ky. Book C, page 215] “Henry Hodge of Henry Co., Tn., Jan. 12, 1857.”just debts paid….all estate to be sold….land at two years credit, Negrows [sic] one year credit all other property same credit except sums under $5 cash….a small mulatto boy named Tody, child of a yellow woman named Jane be free…and bequeath to him one eighth of all my estate which is not otherwise disposed of to be placed in the hands of a trustee for safekeeping until he comes of age…balance of my estate equally divided amongst heirs of my dearest daughter Charlot L. Beck. Except $5 which I will to my son J.J. Hodge my reason for not giving him any more than I have already given him more than a proportionable part of my estate….signed 12 Jan 1857 Henry Hodge”. Proved in court and recorded 25 June 1857.

It is not known why Henry was in Calloway County, Kentucky when he died. He could have been visiting relatives or conducting business. The exact place of Henry’s grave is unknown. His second wife Susan is buried next to her first husband James Carter at the Carter Cemetery in Henry County, Tennessee.

Departed this life on the 23d October, Charlotte L. Beck, consort of Doctor Jas. Beck and daughter of Henry Hodge Esq. aged 28 years 9 months and 21 days.

Mrs Beck had long been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and died in the full assurance of a blessed immortality. – She has left six small children and an effectionate husband, with a large circle of his friends to lament her loss. – Bolivar Ten. Free Press.

From the National Banner and Nashville Whig. Published Nov. 2, 1835.

On October 11, 1839 Dr. James Beck was listed in the Memphis Enquirer at Memphis, Tennessee having bought the entire medicine stock of S.T. Tonclay. He was enumerated in the 1840 census in Memphis and apparently was deceased by 1850.

See the below will of Mary Henry Perkins, nee Hodge, for the listing of Charlotte and Dr. Beck's children.

Will of Mary Henry Perkins [Hardeman Co., Tn. Will Bk. 4, pg. 241] dated Dec. 6, 1847; probated Jan. term 1848. Legatees: G.W. Perkins trustee to Mrs. Ann Brinkly, sister; Elizabeth Hodge, wife of J.J. Hodge; brother J.J. Hodge; 3 nieces: M.J. Hodge, Mary B. Hodge (dau. of Jos. J. Hodge) and C.L. Beck (dau. of Charlotte Hodge Beck); children of deceased sister Charlotte Beck: Henry H., Thomas, James, Charlotte L. and W.C. Beck. Ex. My bro. J.J. Hodge.

Will of Joseph J. Hodge [Filed Dec. 13, 1871, Robertson Co., Tx.] “eldest daughter Martha J. Morrow have what has already been given her, estimate to be $900. Also that she have all the Fullerton land that belongs to me and lies on the west side of Mud Creek to J. C. Gray’s line containing about 200 acres valued at $1000. I then will that Mary J and Ann Elizabeth (Eliza) J. Hodge have all my tract of land lying east of a line run from the N.W. corner of the Allday tract north, so as to pass half way from my house to what is known as Davis house and for Mary J. to have the south half of than and Ann the north half valued each at $900-also that a good horse, a piece besides those they now claim, 5 cows and calves and one bed and furniture each and they be made up out of such things as can be spared equally with Martha J. Morrow. I further will that James Henry Hodge have the house and lot in the town of Owensville where he lives and what he has already had- no more. My wife, Elizabeth Hodge to be administratrix and keep in her possession during her widowhood life all of my estate without security and without having anything to do with the Probate Court further than to have this will probated and a complete inventory of said estate made and recorded. At my wife’s death, balance of estate to be equally divided between my three above named daughters.

Dated 23 Nov 1867. /s/ J. J. Hodge

The family lived at Owensville from 1856 through the Civil War. When the county seat moved to Calvert, the families moved too. J.J. Hodge was an attorney, county judge and owned a general merchandise store (Hodge and Glass). Galloway and Griffin also had a merchandise store. A deed filed in Robertson Co., Texas refers to Joseph J. Hodge and Young E. Gray as, citizens of Henry County, Tennessee. An exert of this deed is as followings: “In the sum of three thousands dollars…for the payment of which I bind my heirs, executors and administrators…dated 15 May 1854….to give title to Joseph J. Hodge and Gray, land in the County of Robertson and part of Headright league granted to George Robertson in Nashville Colony by letters Patent from Mexican Gov., conveyed to Jarrett M. Ridgeway in 1840..18 Feb..by him to A.J. Harrison of Bastrop Co., 21 June 1849, 1,342 acres of land”. [Robertson Co., Tx. Deed Bk. 1, pg. 424].

Letter dated 23 Oct. 1967 from Katherine Galloway, who was County Clerk of Robertson Co., Texas at that time. “Talked with Edward Lockett, grandson of May L. Hodge. J. Henry Hodge is the son of J.J. Hodge. Colonel Henry E. Lockett was killed in the Civil War and left Mary L. and one son. Mary L. married James Henry Hodge and had another son born 1868/1870s. He left her and went with a medicine show and they never heard form him again, but Mary L. lived to be almost 90 years; she taught school in Robertson Co. for about 40 years. James Henry Hodge seems to be a very irresponsible person, I guess that is the reason the will is worded as it is. I have talked to several people who knew Mary since she did not die until 1921. [Mary L. Seale first married Col. Henry E. Lockett in Tenn. and had one child H. E. Lockett, b. 13 Nov 1863; d. 11 Aug 1947. She m/2 James Henry Hodge-possibly in Tenn. and had one, Robert V. Hodge b. ca 1868. They came to Texas from Tenn. [Letter is in the possession of Barbara Roach Knox of Ft. Worth, Texas]

Note 1: Mary Seale's three children by Henry E. Lockett were listed as a Hodge in the 1870 Robertson Co., Tx. census. They were Lizzy (b. ca. 1862), Henry E. (b. Aug. 13, 1863 at Franklin, Robertson Co., Tx.; d. Aug. 11, 1947 at Franklin, Robertson Co., Tx.) and James.

Note 2: Harris Co., Texas Death Certificate 31177-2055 for Robert V. Hodge - son of J.H. Hodge and Mary Lockett. Is this the Lou Hodge in the census record?

Note 3: The informant Mary (Seale/Sealy) Hodge's death certificate was R.V. Hodge and states that she was the daughter of William R. Sealy and Martha Russel.

James Henry and Mary Hodge owned a store in Owensville, which they sold to Dr. J.C. Womack in 1868. It is not known if this Dr. Womack is related to Virginia Womack, wife of Dr. James A. Hodge. There are no known records of James Henry after 1870. Mrs. Mary L. Hodge sold property at Owensville and lived at Englewood. In 1894 she bought lots 1, 2, & 3 in Block 45 adjoining the H.P. House property.

Will of Frankie Gamma (Glass) Johnson. She was living at 3208 S. Jennings, Ft. Worth, Texas. “….want to be buried in Willow Cemetery, Haskell, Co. Tex., by my deceased husband, Henry Johnson…..estate to relative and friends…..to loving cousins Mrs. Eva Wood Alford $40000 to be deposited in some Fort Worth bank for her to receive $50 per month while she lives…..reminder if any to Gamma Bunch Nauert, a life long friend and name sake of mine….Mrs. Katie Glass Carter $2000…. To her daughter Mrs. Christine Carter Hawkins $500….Miss Maxine Glass $500….to Mrs. Fern Glass Decker my land in Robertson County 418 acres S. A. Walker survey and 376.6 acres Ed McMillan survey known as the Glass land, Franklin, Tex., which I inherited when I was 2 years old from my mother….to sister-in-law Mrs. Joadie Johnson Couch $250…sister-in-law Mrs. Georgia Johnson Andruss $1250….loving friend Miss Gennie Siddall $500….loving friend Mrs. Mamie Johnson Baber $4,000 to build a little home and my household things to furnish it….to little Harvene Nauert $20000 in trust for her education after she finishes high school… to Gamma Bunch Nauert my home to do as she pleases….any left over after above bequests to Gamma Bunch Nauert. “She means a great deal to me.” Executor Harvey Nauert, husband of Gamma Bunch Neuert  without bond. A codicil to attempt to clarify her wishes states that gifts given her by Eva Wood Alfort, Gamma Bunch Nauert and Mamie Johnson Baber be returned….Gamma Nauert to have my dinner set of china; china cabinet at north end of dining room to be filled with choicest pieces of odd china, hand painted and cut glass and some sterling silver, mostly spoons. That has her name on it and was a wedding gift from friends long since passed away; a birds eye dressing table with chair that matches large china jardinière and vase in living room.”

“Nannie Johnson Baber to have other house furnishings…I suggest she sell them and help her with expense of moving…I did not mention Cousin Eva Wood Alford for she is old and I felt she not equal to it”.

[Filed Dec. 17, 1954, Vol. 177, pg. 94, Robertson Co., Tx.]

Martha Jane Hodge married John P. Smith on October 31, 1848 in Hardeman County, Tennessee. They were enumerated in the 1850 census in Hardeman County along with his son from a previous marriage. Soon after first husband's death she married Dr. William Barr Morrow on July 17, 1855 in Hardeman County. In the 1860 census Dr. Morrow was practicing medicine in Hardeman County and the following individuals were living in his household: Martha J. (Hodge), dauather Bettie, D. J.W. Neilson, medical students J. Bogard and P. Saunders, also listed is T. Wilborn, the butler. In 1861 Dr. Morrow was appointed a Major and served at the University Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee as the regimental assistant surgeon. In Octobert 1864 he was reassigned to Stewart’s Corps and was pardoned at Greensboro, North Carolina in 1865. After the War they moved to Texas and were enumerated in the 1870 and 1880 census in Robertson County.

Ann Elizabeth J. “Annie” Hodge married Aaron Wood. In 1882 she deeded land to David and Wade Morrow, they were living in Shackelford County, Texas, she signs deed “Annie wife of Aaron Wood”.

Henry Priestly Hodge, a blacksmith by trade, was born circa 1851 in Henry County, Tennessee to a mulatto slave named Jan.  The Reverent Benjamin Peeples was named guardian of the young boy in Henry’s codicil to his last will and testament dated 13 December 1856. In the 1860 census for District 9, Henry County, Tennessee, the young boy, age 9, is living in the household of the Reverent Peeples. Priestly’s first marriage record was on July 4, 1870 in Henry County to Margaret Williams. No return was made on the marriage and it is uncertain if they ever married or that she may have died prior to his second marriage. On December 28, 1879 he married Mrs. Lucy Harrell in Carroll County, Tennessee. This is the only record in which he gives his name as Henry Hodge. In the 1880 Carroll County census record Lucy’s children by her first husband are listed as a Hodge. Those children named were Elijha, Tempy, John, Ada and Edmond. He was listed in the 1891 voter’s list for Carroll County and in 1895 he was listed in the Carroll County Democrat delinguent tax list for District 22. In the 1900 census he and Lucy are living in Carroll County with daughters Tiny and Fannie along with his step-son Elijha Harrell and his two children. He and Lucy are enumerated in the Carroll County census for 1910 and 1920. His third marriage was on November 11, 1923 in Carroll County to Henretta Anderson. It is believe that he died before 1930.
